WoodAsh Glazed Tea Bowl no.9

WoodAsh Glazed Tea Bowl no.9

A traditional Kutsu-gata (Shoe Shape) stoneware summer Tea Bowl. The process behind this bowl begins with a handmade wooden bowl, in this case made from English Ash. A casting is taken by hand from the wooden bowl in stoneware clay taking care to preserve the woodgrain pattern, afterward the original wooden bowl is burned to ash. The wooden ashes are then mixed with kaolin clay and feldspar to create a glaze which is applied to the ceramic bowl. The colouring and glaze qualities are determined by traces of natural metal oxides and minerals, these were once nutrients absorbed through the roots of the tree from the soil in which it stood and are left behind in it's wood ash. The combination of woodgrain texture and ash glaze mean the surface qualities of this clay bowl are almost entirely provided by the original wooden material. Translucent glazes will allow for a woodgrain pattern to show through but opaque glazes may obscure the majority of the pattern with a smooth finish, please judge from the photograph.

This bowl is unique due to the glaze having been individually mixed for the single piece and so cannot be replicated. The bowl is fired in a gas reduction atmosphere to 1280-1300c and is fully vitrified.

This tea bowl measures 11cm wide and 8cm tall.

Due to high demand this product may take up to 2 weeks to dispatch.
